Subject:Temes ... and the Singularity gets scary
Time:08:23 pm
Current Mood:nervousnervous
I just watched Susan Balckmore's lecture on Memes and Temes.
Behold a completely new take on the rapidly approaching Singularity! I see human beings as emergent on the interface between natural and memetic selection. Now a new kind of replicator, temes, threatens to make all of us wetware beings obsolete. The possibility of friendly mind children has become anachronistic, simplistic, laughable.

It's as if we've already  passed some threshold of information speed and/or volume, so that another dimension emerged. It's as if we've passed a tipping point, silently, on the way toward a Simgularity of the Terminator/Eyeborg takeover variety.

Reality couldn't have more drama than this. Why aren't the rest of you excited/scared?

The Singularity is not shiny happy wish fulfillment, it is the coming wave which you can either surf or be drowned by.

A lot of people are going to be drowned, a lot of people will refuse to adapt, and we will think of them the same way we think of rednecks or other non-technological rural folks. Depending on society's willingness to build boats and surfboards (as opposed to denying the coming wave)  a lot more people may be overwhelmed.

"If the singularitarian seems unreasonable, it's because the singularitarian is really a mystic who only looks like a rationalist because he started out with a rationalist philosophical structure, ran with that structure into the future and saw the ineffable."

Subject:Michael Anissimov on C-Realm Podcast
Time:10:36 am

KMO welcomes Michael Anissimov, media director for the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence and keeper of the Accelerating Future blog to the C-Realm to dispel some wholly-headed notions about robots, artificial intelligence, and the possible consequences of their emergence from the space of possibilities into the world of our visceral experience. Topics include the uncomfortable similarity of Ray Kurzweil's Law of Accelerating Returns to Terence McKenna's Time Wave Zero, the very contingent nature of human morality, and the need to build "friendliness" into our Mind Children to prevent them from morphing into our Vile Offspring.

Scientists Worry Machines May Outsmart Man

Impressed and alarmed by advances in artificial intelligence, a group of computer scientists is debating whether there should be limits on research that might lead to loss of human control over computer-based systems that carry a growing share of society’s workload, from waging war to chatting with customers on the phone.

Their concern is that further advances could create profound social disruptions and even have dangerous consequences.

Or has the singularity started?

A slow takeoff one that is...

SSD and solar techs are basically exploding and augmented reality technologies that aren't dumb are coming out this fall.

And we're technically in a recession still.

Hard takeoff by 2016?

Thoughts?

I'd appreciate criticism.

More on Wolfram Alpha and what makes it "not a search engine."

http://www.hplusmagazine.com/articles/ai/wolframalpha-searching-truth

“We have the encyclopedists trying to write everything down. We have people like John Wilkins trying to create an analytical language for thought. We have philosophers and scientists hoping to find a universal theory of the world. But all these attempts founder on the vastness and the subdivisibility of the tasks.”

“Before Newton, nobody had the notion of trying to compute the truth. They always thought in terms of reasoning things out like a human would do. But the point isn’t to emulate a human being. The point is to find an answer."
